In the Good Ole’ Summertime

I know it seems weird to write about summer right after an entry on winter break, but if you’re a sophomore or junior, now is the time to be deciding on and applying to summer programs. Many programs have application deadlines in January.

Just last night, I had an email from a parent asking to recommend summer programs for her junior student, specifically something that will look good on his resume.

While almost any program is better than no program, choosing one is not as simple as throwing a dart at the long list of options. What programs a student attends really depends on a number of factors, some of which are:

  • What gaps are currently in the high school resume
  • A specific college the student wishes to attend
  • Which major the student is planning on
  • Whether working or an internship might be a better alternate.  There may be some great interships at companies which align with a chosen major or interest.
  • How much you are willing/able to pay

Just going to any specific summer program without considering the whole may or may not be useful for in terms of improving a student’s chances at any specific school.   The good news is: with a little review and research there a number of possibilities for every student.

Now is the ideal time to contact a college admissions consultant to review the overall high school resume and plan holistically for summer and senior year.
